To God be the Glory!

The Greek word δόξα (doxa) appears 166 times in the New Testament and in 152 cases, we translate the word directly to GLORY. In this morning's sermon, we focus on a doxology given by Paul to summarize the first three chapters of this epistle to the Ephesian church, and indeed to all the saints.

Here is the list of passages I will refer to in the sermon. I've broken it up into sections to make it easier to study. I hope you find this list eye-opening and convicting and encouraging! All verses are in the English Standard Version.

1 Corinthians 15:40–41

40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

2 Corinthians 4:15–18

15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Galatians 1:3–5

The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Titus 2:11–14

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

Hebrews 13:20–21

20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

To God Be the Glory!

Fanny Crosby (1875)

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son.

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our worship, when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear His voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear His voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice!

Come to the Father through Jesus the Son

And give Him the Glory, Great things He has done!

A Call to Holiness

As we have studied Chapter 2 of the letter to the Ephesians, there has been a great calling to holiness for the people of God. Our good works are not meant to be evidence of how good we are, but of how good is God who has changed us.

On Wednesday nights we are diving deeper into this concept with a study of Holiness by Joel Beeke. The material can be found under the resources tab of our website, at Chapel Library, or just ask me for a printed copy.

Come meet with your FBC Bagdad family this Wednesday night at 6:30 in the worship center for a time of study and prayer.
